When the full-time whistle blew at the Etihad Stadium in northern England on Sunday, the live broadcast quickly focused on a close-up of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian had just scored the winning goal in his team’s 2-1 victory against title rival Arsenal, a result which puts the fate of the trophy in City’s hands with just five matches left to play.

So, with the camera shoved close to his face, Haaland decided to have some fun. While his fans celebrated in the stands, City’s talisman sent the millions of viewers sitting in pubs and at home a message.

Looking down at the camera with a side-eye, Haaland smirked and sang the chorus of Flo Rida’s 2011 hit, “Good Feeling.”

“Oh, oh, sometimes, I get a good feeling, yeah,” Haaland crooned, in a moment that has created a meme worldwide.

It was also a moment that spoke to a wider narrative in this year’s Premier League title race, one that’s made it so exciting for the neutral and so excruciating for anyone associated with Arsenal Football Club.

An unwanted tag

Before we go any further, it’s important to define a typically British idiom that has been used countless times over the past week the Gunners have squandered a nine-point lead in the league.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the phrase to “bottle it” is to “fail at something because you are frightened.” It’s often used in sports, notably English soccer, as a way of deriding a team’s mentality in clutch moments.

And, rightly or wrongly, the unwanted label has been thrown at Arsenal and its players of late, with the team’s form abandoning them when they need it most.

That’s because for much of this season, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta looked to have found a recipe for winning. It hasn’t been pretty – in fact, it’s often been hard to watch – but it seemingly set the team on course to end the club’s 22-year wait for the league title.

Now, though, that lead has been cut to just three points, with Manchester City having played a game less. It means if they beat Burnley on Wednesday, the Citizens will leapfrog Arsenal at the top of the table on goal difference.

The turnaround in form has emboldened opposition fans to have some fun at the Gunners’ expense. Before the title clash on Sunday, plastic water bottles emblazoned with Arsenal’s club crest were being sold outside City’s stadium.

Many of its fans were seen pretending to drink from them as Arsenal fans hurriedly made their way back to London.

It’s also why Manchester City fans unfurled a giant banner at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, with the words “Panic on the streets of London” displayed for all the world to see – a nod to the song “Panic” by Manchester band The Smiths.

And although no one could accuse Arsenal of bottling it against Manchester City this weekend – the Gunners gave a good account of themselves on the pitch – there is now a growing pattern of the club struggling to perform when it really matters.

It has many pundits questioning whether this team has the mentality to succeed.

The club, which has finished second in the league the past three seasons, lost the League Cup final to City last month. It was then knocked out of the FA Cup quarterfinals by a team from a league below.

And while it still sits top of the league for now, there is something in the air that suggests this could be another “bridesmaid, not the bride” season for Arsenal and its fans. It’s likely what Haaland was referring to with that message down the camera on Sunday.

Arteta and his Arsenal squad have, of course, downplayed the noise around the club this season, arguing that the widespread mocking doesn’t impact the inner sanctum of the team.

Arsenal’s star midfielder Declan Rice was even seen telling his teammates on the pitch Sunday that “it’s not over” in terms of the title race, and, on paper at least, he’s right.

Taking a macro look at it all, the Gunners are still having a brilliant season. They still have a real chance of winning the Premier League and just qualified for the Champions League semifinals – albeit in particularly turgid and uninspiring fashion. And yet, you’d struggle to find even the most ardent Arsenal fan who is confident of winning both.

Objective hope

That’s because soccer is not played on paper or on AI-generated simulations that, even now, say Arsenal might be the favorite to win the league.

Emotion, momentum and mentality all play such a massive part in the sport and it’s why Manchester City will be licking its lips heading into the last five games of the league season.

City manager Pep Guardiola has been here before. In truth, there is no one better in the world – maybe ever – for guiding a team to league success. Many of its players have won big trophies in the past and stars such as Haaland and Rayan Cherki look to be having fun with it. The fans have also seen this all before and feel confident that, once again, this is their season.

Compare that to Arsenal and the difference couldn’t be more striking. The players looked worked up at times and the fans are nervous. Arteta, who worked under Guardiola at City before joining the north London club, is saying the right things, but there are questions about whether he really believes the messages of hope himself.

One thing you can’t question is the form. In the first 49 matches of this season, Arsenal lost a total of three games. In the past six matches, in games which are so vital, Arsenal has lost four times.

The hope now for Gunners fans is that their team can take some inspiration from the improved performance, albeit a losing one, against Manchester City yesterday and turn around their form just in time.

The rest of the season is likely to be a straight shootout. It’s all about who can hold their nerve and who blinks first.

“We have three points of advantage and five games to play. So everything is still to play for,” Areta claimed in his post-match press conference Sunday, pointing out the objective logic that has his team very much on the edge of history.

“So we know how much we want it and we’re not going to stop and we’re going to go again, that’s for sure.”

This season, though, it feels like it’s not only the league at stake for Arsenal. It’s also an opportunity to shake off that unwanted tag of maybe men and finally give its fans something to gloat and celebrate about.

FIFA on Tuesday opened disciplinary proceedings against the Spanish soccer federation because of anti-Muslim chants made by Spanish fans during a game against Egypt last week.

The chants drew condemnation from Spain star Lamine Yamal, the Spanish government and the soccer federation itself.

Spanish police had said they were investigating the behavior by fans during last Tuesday’s friendly game held in Barcelona.

“FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings today against the Spanish FA for the incidents in the friendly against Egypt,” soccer’s governing body said in a statement.

Yamal, who is Muslim, said the chants made by some of the fans at RCDE Stadium were disrespectful and intolerable. The Barcelona star said it didn’t matter that he was not targeted.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees are off to good starts — and their MVPs are finally starting to hit.

Shohei Ohtani hadn’t driven in a run until Friday, then homered in that game and again Sunday. He and Aaron Judge each have three straight multihit games.

Judge hasn’t needed to carry the Yankees, who are 7-2. They had allowed a paltry 15 runs on the season before a 7-6 loss to Miami on Sunday. Cam Schlittler has made two scoreless starts and New York ran wild against the Marlins — with even Giancarlo Stanton stealing a base.

It wasn’t a great first week for the Dodgers’ quartet of sluggers — Ohtani, Kyle Tucker, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman — but then they broke out in a big way as Los Angeles posted 31 runs in three games at Washington. The Dodgers are 7-2 with Andy Pages off to a 16-for-34 start at the plate, so they can afford to be patient with their stars.

Los Angeles now heads to Toronto for a three-game series — the first meeting between the teams since the Dodgers beat the Blue Jays in Game 7 of the World Series in Canada last year.

Battling Bucs

On the topic of teams succeeding while waiting for stars to get untracked, Pittsburgh swept three straight from Baltimore to improve to 6-3. The Pirates have won five straight, although Paul Skenes has allowed six runs in 5 2/3 innings through his first two starts.

They haven’t needed much from top prospect Konnor Griffin either. The infielder is 1 for 9 since being called up, but he has yet to play in a loss. The Pirates have 10 of their next 13 games at home, with Skenes expected to take the mound Tuesday when they host San Diego.

Trivia time

When is the last time the NCAA men’s basketball champion and baseball’s World Series champion came from the same state in a given year?

Performance of the week

Jo Adell went 1 for 3 at the plate Saturday, but it’s what he did defensively that made a real impact. The Angels’ outfielder made three home run-robbing catches to help Los Angeles to a 1-0 win over Seattle.

Adell made spectacular catch while crashing into the seats when J.P. Crawford led off the ninth with a drive to right. Adell also denied Cal Raleigh what would have been the catcher’s first homer of the season.

Comeback of the week

Arizona trailed Detroit by four Tuesday night before scoring six times in the bottom of the eighth to win 7-5. The Tigers had a win probability of 96.4% after seven, according to Baseball Savant.

Corbin Carroll hit a bases-loaded double that scored two runs, and Jose Fernandez added a three-run homer. It was the second home run of the game for Fernandez, who was making his major league debut.

Trivia answer

In 1973, UCLA won the national title and the Oakland Athletics won the World Series. That pairing also won in 1972.

There was a recent near-miss in 2021 when Baylor won the NCAA Tournament and the Houston Astros lost to the Atlanta Braves in the World Series. The only way this double can happen this year is if Michigan wins in basketball and the Tigers prevail in baseball.

Shohei Ohtani homered for the second straight day and Seiya Suzuki went deep twice and defending champion Japan beat South Korea 8-6 on Saturday night at Tokyo and improved to 2-0 at the World Baseball Classic.

Suzuki drove in four runs and Masataka Yoshida homered and had three RBIs for the Samurai Warriors, who overcame a 3-0, first-inning deficit.

A day after hitting a grand slam in a 13-0 win over Taiwan, Ohtani hit a tying home run on a hanging curve from Young Pyo Ko in the third.

Suzuki hit a two-run homer in the second. Two batters after Ohtani’s drive, Suzuki chased Ko by homering for a 4-3 lead. Yoshida homered on reliever Byeong Hyeon Jo’s second pitch.

Hyeseong Kim’s two-run homer against Hiromi Ito tied the score in the fourth for South Korea (1-1).

Suzuki put Japan ahead for good at 6-5 when he drew a bases-loaded walk from Young Kyu Kim in a three-run seventh that included Yoshida’s two-run single.

Ju Won Kim cut South Korea’s deficit with an RBI single off Yuki Matsumoto in the eighth before Hyeseong Kim stranded the bases loaded when he struck out against Yuki Matsumoto.

Winner Atsuki Taneichi struck out the side in the seventh, and Taisei Ota got three straight outs on seven pitches for the save.

Japan and Australia are 2-0 in Group C and meet Sunday as the favorites to advance to the quarterfinals.

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye was at the game, a day after Timothée Chalamet and pop singer Bad Bunny attended.

Albies hits game-winning 3-run homer in 9th as Netherlands stuns Nicaragua 4-3

Ozzie Albies hit a game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Netherlands over Nicaragua.

The Netherlands began its two-out rally on Ceddanne Rafaela’s single against reliever Angel Obando. Xander Bogaerts doubled, advancing Rafaela to third before Albies hit Obando’s first pitch over the wall in right.

The Netherlands improved to 1-1 in Group D. Nicaragua dropped to 0-2.

Jeter Downs hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth to put Nicaragua ahead 3-1. He drove a sinker from Netherlands reliever Lars Huijer over the wall in left-center. Huijer threw two innings of relief for the win.

The Netherlands stranded 14 base runners and were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position before Albies’ homer.

Rafaela, Bogaerts and Druw Jones all had two hits for the Netherlands.

Nicaragua starter Erasmo Ramírez plunked Albies with the bases loaded in the third, giving the Netherlands a 1-0 lead. Ramirez allowed one run and five hits over five innings while Netherlands starter Jaitoine Kelly threw two scoreless innings.

Fairchild’s grand slam powers Taiwan over Czechs 14-0

Stuart Fairchild, whose mother is from Taiwan, hit a second-inning grand slam off Jan Novak for a quick six-run lead.

Taiwan set a WBC record with seven steals and improved to 1-2 in a game cut to seven innings by a mercy rule. The slam was the third of the tournament, one shy of the WBC record.

The Czechs dropped to 0-3 in their second WBC and are 1-6 in two tournaments, with a win over China in 2023.

Taiwan went ahead in the first on a throwing error by catcher Martin Cervenka on a double steal, and and an RBI single Yu Chang, who had three hits and four RBIs.

Winner Chen Zhong-Ao Zhuang struck out four in 2 2/3 innings. Novak took the loss, allowing six runs, five hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings.

Naylor brothers’ defense, Cassie’s 2-run homer lead Canada over Colombia 8-2

A run-saving defensive play by brothers Josh and Bo Naylor boosted Canada in the first inning at San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Owen Cassie hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the second off emergency starter Austin Bergner after Julio Teheran was scratched. A 35-year-old right-hander who last pitched in the major leagues in 2024, Teheran felt right shoulder impingement while warming up.

Canada won its opener while Colombia dropped to 0-2 in Group A.

Michael Arroyo led off the game with a single off Michael Soroka, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Reynaldo Rodriguez grounded to first baseman Josh Naylor, who threw to brother Bo at the plate for the tag.

That was one of four Colombia outs on the bases. Rodriguez and Jesus Marriaga were caught stealing by Bo Naylor and Daniel Vellojin was thrown out trying to reach second on a dropped fly ball in the ninth inning.

Arroyo cut Colombia’s deficit with an RBI single in the third off Soroka, who allowed four hits over three innings for the win. Abraham Toro restored a two-run lead with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom half from Emerson Martinez.

Josh Naylor had an run-scoring single in the seventh that drove in Denzel Clarke, a cousin, after Marriaga dropped Clarke’s fly to right for an error.

Harold Ramírez had an RBI double in the eighth. With two on and two outs, Gio Urshela swung and missed at three straight sliders from Eric Cerantola.

Toro had an RBI triple in a four-run bottom half and scored on Bo Naylor’s single.

Phillippe Aumont, who last pitched in the major leagues in 2015, struck out Tito Polo for the final out.

Nori homers twice, Canzone adds 4 RBIs as Italy blanks Brazil 8-0

Dante Nori hit two home runs and Dominic Canzone homered with four RBIs to help Italy to an 8-0 win over Brazil in Pool B play on Saturday in Houston.

The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when Astro Zach Dezenzo hit an RBI single with one out to put Italy on top. Jac Caglianone followed with a two-out double that scored another run but Dezenzo was tagged out at home on the play to end the inning.

Nori’s first home run came with one out in the seventh to make it 3-0. There was one out with two outs when Canzone’s homer to right center field extended the lead to 6-0.

There was one out in the eighth when Nori went deep again on a solo shot to right center that made it 7-0. Canzone had an RBI double with two outs to leave Italy up 8-0.

Brazil managed just four singles to fall to 0-5 all-time in the tournament after losing to Japan, Cuba and China in 2013 in its only other WBC appearance. The team lost to the United States 15-5 in its WBC opener on Friday night.

Brazil starter Enzo Sawayama allowed two hits in four scoreless innings and Italy starter Sam Aldegheri allowed one hit and struck out eight in 4 2/3 scoreless innings.

Italy plays Great Britain on Sunday and Brazil faces Mexico on Sunday night.

The German word of the week in the Bundesliga ahead of Saturday’s showdown (live at 12:30 p.m. ET, on ESPN+) is not the marketing invention der Klassiker but rather die Aufholjagd (literally, “the hunt to pursue”).

There are in all honesty, very few, even here in the bustling Ruhrpott this week, who believe Borussia Dortmund are likely to make up nine points on leaders Bayern Munich. With the goal difference equation stacked in favor of the Rekordmeister, that is the challenge facing BVB with only 11 games left. But a head-to-head Gipfeltreffen (summit meeting) offers a chance for a new perspective.

Dortmund have spent much of this season under Niko Kovac defying stereotypes: showing a more stable face, grinding out wins, pressing better, reemerging as clearly the second-best team in the Bundesrepublik.

But on Wednesday night in Bergamo, the old problems came back to haunt die Schwarz-Gelben, and the team collectively had to Lehrgeld zahlen (literally pay up as a result of being taught a painful lesson) after being eliminated by Atalanta in their knockout round playoff tie in the UEFA Champions League.

Whether Dortmund can translate those lessons — among them, don’t start a big match so passively and Gregor Kobel, don’t give the ball to the opposition with extra time looming — into something successful against a team of Bayern’s sheer quality, is another matter.

Bayern are almost certain to break the Bundesliga’s single-season goal-scoring record (they have 85 goals and need 17 more, a mere bagatelle surely?) Harry Kane requires 14 between now and mid-May to surpass Robert Lewandowski’s 2020-21 benchmark of 41 league goals. The Englishman has registered a Doppelpack (double) in each of his past three league matches and if he stays fit, you would not bet against him becoming the most goal-rich winner of the Torjägerkanone award ever.

With Michael Olise scoring freely and more importantly, assisting others, and Luis Díaz posing significant problems for opposing sides, Bayern win most games by overwhelming and obliterating. Nobody does it better.

There is, however, a slight glass-jaw quality defensively, which has been evident since January, with only one Bundesliga clean sheet so far this calendar year.

Augsburg for example, have gone to the Allianz Arena and beaten them, Hoffenheim caused them bother even while down to 10 men, and last week Eintracht Frankfurt scored a couple of late goals that Bayern fans, anticipating an easy win, will have seen as nervig (irritating).

At the time of writing, it is unclear who will stand between the posts for the Rekordmeister. Manuel Neuer has been working all week in a bid to get back into the side after sustaining a calf muscle injury at the Weserstadion nearly two weeks ago.

However, Bayern have faith in 22-year-old understudy Jonas Urbig, who looks ever more like the future custodian. Urbig stumbled in the Augsburg game, but his performances have ranged mostly from good to excellent.

If there are any doubts about Neuer’s fitness, it would seem foolish — given the eight-point difference at the top and crunch Champions League matches ahead — to take a chance. Alphonso Davies is out for the foreseeable future with a muscle fiber injury, but with Konrad Laimer available again, Vincent Kompany has plenty of squad depth in the fullback positions with Josip Stanisic and Hiroki Ito.

It almost seems unfair to Dortmund, given the colossal task that they face on Saturday, that right wing back Julian Ryerson is suspended. The Norwegian, once viewed as an honest journeyman, has transformed himself into one of the most valuable players in Kovac’s squad.

Diligent in normal play, Ryerson’s deliveries from open or set play situations can be devilish and he recently crafted all four goals in the same game against Mainz. Yan Couto, more adventurous going forward but less secure defensively, must fulfill that role against Bayern.

At least Nico Schlotterbeck will return to anchor the Dreierkette (back three) in front of Kobel, whose 11 clean sheets top the Bundesliga goalkeeping charts. BVB will require energy and guile in abundance from Marcel Sabitzer and Felix Nmecha in midfield against the formidable duo of Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic.

Saturday is due to be another day of Verkehrschaos in Dortmund and there have been a few recently. This one is due to industrial action by the trade union, Verdi, knocking out the Stadtbahn (city train/tram service) and bus lines. Fans have been urged to walk the 40 minutes from the Stadtzentrum (city center) to the Signal Iduna Park.

Thereafter, there’s a very real danger that in 90 minutes, Dortmund’s season could effectively disappear in a puff of smoke. Already out of the Champions League and the DFB-Pokal, defeat in the Klassiker would make an Aufholjagd unthinkable.
