Kevin Newman’s two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a four-hit night and gave the Arizona Diamondbacks a 6-5 victory over the reeling Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.

Newman had a pair of doubles and a single before coming to the plate in the ninth against Alexis Diaz (1-2), who had loaded the bases with a hit batsman and two walks. Newman lined the pitch to shallow right to score Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Gabriel Moreno.

“Just got lucky on that one, placed it in a good spot and scored two runs,” said Newman, who has had a chance to play this season due to injuries to regular shortstop Geraldo Perdomo and top prospect Jordan Lawlar.

His approach, he said, is “just working on staying up the middle, to stay on those off-speed pitches a little bit better.”

Justin Martinez (1-0), the fifth Arizona pitcher of the game, picked up his first major league win with a scoreless ninth.

The Reds have lost 11 of their last 12 games, including a three-game sweep by the Diamondbacks in Cincinnati last week.

“We came back and put ourselves in a nice position to win the game,” Reds manager David Bell said. “Alexis has been so good for us on so many occasions. Those games are going to happen.”

Cincinnati scored twice in the eighth to take the lead. Jeimer Candelario singled to center on a play that was originally ruled a catch and a double play. But replay showed that Arizona’s Corbin Carroll trapped the ball, allowing Spencer Steer to score the tying run from second instead of being doubled off.

Mike Ford followed with a triple that bounced away from right fielder Jake McCarthy and scored Candelario easily.

Former Reds third baseman Eugenio Suárez put Arizona ahead 4-3 in the seventh with a two-out RBI single off Fernando Cruz, who escaped further damage.

Moreno and Joc Pederson homered for Arizona, which returned from a six-game trip. The Diamondbacks chased Reds starter Graham Ashcraft after four innings but couldn’t come through with a two-out hit until Suarez did it in the seventh. Arizona stranded 14 runners in the game.

Moreno’s homer was his first of the season. He hit seven last year but added four more in Arizona’s postseason run to the World Series.

Jordan Montgomery pitched into the sixth for the Diamondbacks. He gave up six hits, walked three and struck out seven.

Pederson and Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo were ejected in the eighth inning by plate umpire Mark Carlson. Pederson was called out on strikes with two on and one out.

“I didn’t agree with one of the pitches, I flipped my bat and he threw me out,” Pederson said. “I didn’t know that was illegal. I guess I learned something new.”

As for Lovullo, who jumped in to defend his DH, he had a few choice words that earned his first ejection of the season and 18th of his career.

“I was battling my own frustration,” he said. “Mark’s a great umpire.”

Ketel Marte’s first-inning single off the bag at first extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Reds: OF TJ Friedl (fractured left thumb) was placed on the injured list and will miss 4-5 weeks, manager David Bell said before the game. Friedl was hit by a pitch in Sunday’s game at San Francisco. OF Jacob Hurtubise was called up from Triple-A Louisville, and made his major-league debut Monday night, pinch running for Ford in the eighth.

Diamondbacks: OF Alek Thomas (left hamstring) received a platelet-rich plasma injection on Monday after experiencing swelling after his rehab assignment. Thomas has been limited to four games this season.

George Kirby allowed three hits over seven shutout innings, Luke Raley hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 on Monday night.

A night that started with a lucky fan catching foul balls on consecutive pitches ended with another dominant pitching performance that helped the Mariners improve to 19-11 over the past 30 games.

Kirby (4-3) had been bothered by a sore knee, but was terrific. He angrily pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first inning after hitting a pair of batters, but appeared to become energized by getting himself out of the situation.

“If anything else, that just fires me up to make that pitch even more fine on the corner,” Kirby said.

He gave up Bobby Witt Jr.’s first inning single, then didn’t allow another hit until Dairon Blanco reached on an infield single in the fifth. Kirby struck out six, walked none. It was the third time this season he pitched at least six innings and didn’t allow a run.

“George is angry some nights and tonight was the night. There was a few calls that he didn’t get that he thought he should have got, but he was on the attack,” Servais said.

Raley’s second homer of the season traveled an estimated at 432 feet and came after Cal Raleigh doubled on the first pitch of the second inning from Kansas City starter Brady Singer. Raley also appeared to break – or have come unscrewed — the celebratory trident used by the Mariners to celebrate home runs.

“All I was doing was carrying it and it fell apart,” Raley said.

Raley is hitting .375 with a 1.131 OPS in May.

“I’ve put a lot of work in. I was busting my butt to get back to feeling comfortable in the box and it’s paying off now,” Raley said.

Raleigh and Raley added an RBI singles an inning later. Raleigh’s was a 410-foot shot that tipped off Blanco’s glove as he jumped at the fence. Julio Rodríguez scored, but Jorge Polanco had to wait near first base and could only advance 90 feet, leaving Raleigh with possibly the longest single of his career.

Ty France added a two-run homer in the eighth inning, his third of the season.

Kansas City’s Michael Massey had a two-out, two-run double in the eighth, but closer Andrés Muñoz recorded the final four outs for his sixth save.

Singer (3-2) gave up a season-high nine hits and allowed more than two earned runs for only the second time this season – both losses. Singer needed 108 pitches to get through five innings and struck out six.

“His stuff was good. Missed his spots a couple of times there, at least the ones I saw on the board there. Middle mistakes with pretty good hitters,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Royals: RHP Carlos Hernandez (shoulder) pitched 1 1/3 innings on Sunday as part of his rehab assignment at Triple-A Omaha, the first time he pitched more than one inning.

Mariners: Polanco left the game before the start of the sixth inning due to hamstring tightness in his right leg. … SS J.P. Crawford (oblique) is expected to start a rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday.

UP NEXT

Royals: RHP Michael Wacha (2-4, 5.15) looks for his second straight win after giving up two earned runs over six innings in his last start. Mariners: RHP Logan Gilbert (3-1, 2.94) will try and rebound after giving up eight runs on nine hits in a loss to Minnesota.

Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott is getting help to address his red challenge flag decisions by adding former NFL official John Parry to his staff, a person briefed on the hiring confirmed to The Associated Press on Monday.

The person spoke to The AP on the condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the move. Buffalo’s hiring of Parry to the role of officiating liaison was first reported by the New York Post.

While most networks have hired former officials to provide analysis on penalties, the Bills are believed to be among the NFL’s first teams to add one to their staff.

Parry spent 19 years as an NFL official, including his final 12 as a referee before retiring after working his third Super Bowl to close the 2018 season. He then spent the past five years serving as a rules analyst for ESPN.

Parry fills a first-time role for the Bills and McDermott, who is entering his eighth season as coach.

McDermott was successful on three of six challenges made last season, but has an overall record of having just 10 of 33 plays overturned, including playoffs, according to Pro Football Reference. Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid, by comparison, hit on four of five challenges last season and is 72 of 143 overall.

Parry’s knowledge of the rules can also assist in time management situations late in games in advising when it’s best to call timeouts when dealing with penalties as well as other rule changes introduced by the league.

Parry’s hiring comes after McDermott was added to the NFL rules committee in March.

The first half of NASCAR’s regular season wrapped with a satisfying, drought-busting win by past champion Brad Keselowski at Darlington Raceway.

Keselowski, in his third full season as a driver-owner at Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing, locked himself into the playoffs and marked himself as a title contender for the fall.

There are several other usual suspects to watch including 2021 Cup Series winner Kyle Larson, his Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron and Joe Gibbs Racing leader Denny Hamlin, who is tied with Byron for the series lead with three victories this season.

Not so fast, said former driver and current NASCAR TV analyst Jeff Burton. Just look at the past two champions in Penske racers Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney.

“Raise your hand if you had them winning the championships this time of year these past two years,” Burton said. “It’s very hard to know what’s going to happen.”

But it’s not difficult to make a few logically informed predictions as the circuit heads into its All-Star Weekend at North Wilkesboro.

Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing Strong Once More

JGR’s Hamlin has been on a championship quest since coming up short last season and has had one of the strongest cars each week. Along with his three victories, Hamlin has led laps at each race this season and finished fourth at the Goodyear 400 this past Sunday. Christopher Bell, who won at Phoenix, gives JGR two playoff participants so far.

Byron and Larson are leading the Hendrick charge, combining for five wins this season including Byron’s success at the Daytona 500 to start Hendrick’s 40th anniversary season. Chase Elliott’s victory at Texas gives Rick Hendrick three spots in the playoffs with Alex Bowman, who was eighth at Darlington this past week, the only team driver without a win. Bowman sits ninth in the standings.

Byron said at Darlington he needed to be more consistent in this upcoming summer stretch to prepare for the playoffs.

“We have the pace,” Byron said. “I feel like that’s what you’re really striving for, to have pace to win races. We have that, it’s just that we’re not consistently putting the weekends together, in terms of balance and execution.”

FORD CHARGING FORWARD

Keselowski’s victory at Darlington was the first for a Ford this season, but likely won’t be the last. Keselowski’s RFK Racing driver Chris Buescher, who has won four times since Keselowski became a co-owner in 2022, has come agonizing close to winning again the past two races.

Buescher lost a photo finish to Larson at Kansas two weeks ago by 0.001 second, the closest finish in NASCAR history. At Darlington, Buescher got knocked into the wall by Tyler Reddick while leading with nine laps to go.

Neither Buescher nor Reddick, 1-2 at the time, were contending after their tangle and Buescher angrily confronted Reddick after both got out of their cars.

Those were tough for Buescher to deal with, but it’s likely he won’t disappear in the season’s second half. In fact, there were four Ford drivers among the top seven finishers at Darlington.

WHO ELSE?

Neither of the past two series champs in Logano and Blaney have won a race to assure themselves the postseason, although Blaney is in better position at eighth in the standings while Logano is 17th, first out of the 16-driver field.

Neither one had a strong showing at Darlington. Blaney got squeezed when Byron clipped Martin Truex Jr., who then pushed Blaney into the wall and out of the race.

Logano got a speeding penalty entering the pits late in the race and was sent to the back of the field. He finished 21st.

Josh Berry, who replaced NASCAR champion Kevin Harvick in the No. 4 at Stewart-Haas Racing, had his best placing this season in third.

Other winless drivers among the top 16 on points include Truex in second, Ty Gibbs in seventh and Kyle Busch in 13th.

All will be sorted out when the series returns to Darlington for the final regular-season race, the Southern 500, on Sept. 1.

Top-ranked Iga Swiatek remained on course for an uncommon Madrid-Rome double after beating Angelique Kerber to reach the Italian Open quarterfinals on Monday.

It was a ninth straight win for Swiatek, and the two-time Rome champion will next face Madison Keys after the American player eased past Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-1 in a match that was interrupted by an environmental protest.

Swiatek needed eight set points to secure the opener but had no such problems at the end of the second, sealing a 7-5, 6-3 victory on the first match point when Kerber’s return went wide.

The match against Keys will be a repeat of last week’s Madrid Open semifinal, which Swiatek won. The Polish player is attempting to become the first woman to win the “dirt double” since Serena Williams in 2013.

“For sure, playing against Maddie is not easy,” Swiatek said. “The score was pretty one way in Madrid. It’s kind of easy for your mind to just drift off sometimes. The most important thing is to stay focused and really disciplined.”

“As soon as I saw them come over the barrier, my first thought was like, ‘Should I go tackle one of them?’ But I stopped myself,” Keys said. “And then the chair (umpire) started yelling at me to go sit down.

“Unfortunately, it’s starting to become a little bit of a common thing that’s happening.”

The players returned to the locker room and the protestors did not resist when security intervened before police and firefighters also arrived to handle the situation.

Two more Americans were through to the quarterfinals after third-seeded Coco Gauff rallied to beat Paula Badosa 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 and Danielle Collins eased past Irina-Camelia Begu 6-0, 6-3.

Second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka fought back from a set down and had to fend off three match points — after getting treatment for a back problem — before beating Elina Svitolina 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7) in a match that finished well after midnight local time.

Two-time champion Svitolina looked certain to secure the victory on her first match point as she had what should have been the simplest of volleys over the net with Sabalenka seemingly stranded right at the other side of the court. But Svitolina hit the ball into the net.

Victoria Azarenka, Jelena Ostapenko and Qinwen Zheng also advanced.

In the men’s tournament, defending champion Daniil Medvedev survived a scare before prevailing against Serbian qualifier Hamad Medjedovic 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-5 in their third-round match.

Next Gen titleholder Medjedovic was given a standing ovation as he left the court after some courageous tennis but he will be regretting not making the most of a set point in the opening set.

The second-seeded Medvedev will face Tommy Paul in the round of 16 after the American beat Dominik Koepfer 6-4, 6-3.

Last week’s winner Andrey Rublev, who was seeded fourth in Rome, was upset by French qualifier Alexandre Muller 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 for his first win over a top-10 player.

Madrid runner-up Felix Auger-Aliassime was beaten by ninth-seeded Alex de Minaur 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4.

Also advancing were Hubert Hurkacz, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Sebastian Baez and Nicolas Jarry.

Adolis García and these road-happy Rangers are not only tops in Texas, they’re best in the American League.

García homered twice and drove in five runs as the Texas Rangers reached their first World Series in 12 years with an 11-4 blowout of the Houston Astros in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series on Monday night.

Corey Seager got the Rangers started with a long homer in a three-run first inning. Nathaniel Lowe also went deep to give Texas — one of six major league teams without a World Series title — its first berth in the Fall Classic since consecutive trips in 2010 and 2011.

García homered for the fourth straight game and set a record for RBIs in a postseason series with 15. He had four hits, scored three times and was the obvious choice for ALCS MVP in a series that saw the road team win every game.
